I’m sure that you’ve heard about how many start up companies fail when they first begin, and the reason that most (if not all) of their failures is because they don’t create a good fountain to build on.

I wrote my own book about “how to make money.” I compiled all of the regurgitated information I could find, put a twist on it, and started to sell it. After 2 weeks and a little over $30 in sales I started to think:

“Why am I selling a book about how to make money… when I have NEVER in my life made any real money!?!”

You may laugh, but it took me a few weeks before I realized that there was a problem there. I decided to stop selling my book, and started to look for other ways to make money online. What I stumbled upon next really gets exciting.

I was going to college at the time, and my degree is in “Computer Information Systems.” I knew some things about programming, but not enough to create anything real. What I did know is where programmers spend their time online.

So I started visiting places where you could hire programmers and got to know a few. I then started to search for a market that needed something.

What I came upon was the “Resale Rights” market. Basically this was people buying and selling digital products (ebooks and software) that they could then go and sell to other people. This concept really excited me. I purchased a lot of these products, but struggled to sell them because all of the products had links back to the author’s websites.

These authors were making money every time I sold these products… on the backend. When I realized that, the first thing I thought was,

“I wish that had a way to brand all of these files with my own links.”

And there the idea was born. I just needed to create a product that would brand these “resale rights” products. I wouldn’t be competing directly with that market, but make a complementary product that would benefit them all.

I went back to the programmers that I had been building relationships with, and gave them my idea. Within a matter of weeks they created a product that is now known as Zip Brander. (You can see the product at www.ZipBrander.com)

I’m not going to go into how I marketed it in this lesson (I’ll save that for another day), but with the one product I made over $1,000 my first month with it, and it made us over $50,000 in 2004 alone.

Since then I’ve been able to branch out to a lot of various niches and have had amazing success in most of them. In other issues I will share exact case studies of these that you will be able to model in your businesses.

How To Pick The Right Niche

I want to show you now how to choose your niche. Just follow these 3 simple steps.

Step 1 – Do not choose the “how to make money” niche. I’m not sure why, but I made this mistake along with thousands of other people. This is the most competitive niche in the world. If you want to fight against the marketers, good luck. But there is a lot more money (and it’s made a lot easier) in the niches I’ll explain below.

Step 2 – Look at your personal talents, and start from there. I have had this conversation more then once – usually every time I discuss an online business with someone.

I ask them what their hobbies are that we could market, and they almost always they tell me that they don’t have anything they could sell. The problem is that people usually look at their current job, and can’t think of ways they can market that skill.

Don’t look at your current job, but look at what you do on your free time. The thing that is your passion. This is where you’ll find your niche.

Here are examples of the last 3 conversations I’ve had:

Friend #1 – works construction, and couldn’t think of a marketable skill. After 3 1/2 minutes realized that he has twin girls. Found there was a huge market for informational product in this niche and him and his wife are now working on their first product.

Friend #2 – works as a manager at Office Depot. One the weekends loves to shot guns with his dad. They are creating a software program that helps people to increase their accuracy when shooting. They are also creating video demonstrations on how to improve your accuracy.

Friend #3 – came to me asking for help promoting a “how to make money online” course. He had to call me using a video relay because he’s deaf. I told him that he was going in the wrong direction with what he was promoting. He had no experience making money online. I asked him what his hobbies were, and surely enough told me he didn’t have any that he could sell. Before I even asked that question I knew what his niche was. He’s been speaking through sign language his whole life, and there are thousands of people searching every month on how to learn sign language.

What do you do in your free time when no one else is around? Are you good at video games? Are you a good cook? Do you play any sports? Do you throw dinner parties? Do you collect anything? Can you play an instrument? What is your passion? When you can answer this… then you know what your niche is.

Step 3 – Research your market. Don’t worry – this part isn’t nearly as hard as you’d think. Within about 5 minutes I can usually tell if a niche is worth looking at. There are 3 things you need to do, and you’ll know if it’s the right niche.

First – Check out the search engines. There are a lot more advanced tools then this, but this one is completely free to use. Go to http://inventory.overture.com and type in your niche. This will show you how many times that word was searched for that month on their search engine. If there are a lot of people searching for it each money, the it’s likely a good niche.

Second – Search for online communities related to your niche. People with similar interests migrate to the same places online. Wrestlers hang out at wrestling forums, poets hang out in poetry message boards, etc… Go to www.google.com and type in “________ forums” or “_________ message board” or “_______ groups” (put your niche in the blank). Visit these forums and see if they are active and how many members they have. You can often find forums with 10,000+ members in it. If you find good communities focused around your niche, then this is another good sign.

Third – Search for similar products. If you can find others selling products in your niche, then it’s usually a good sign that there’s some life there. Purchase their products and get to know your competition (because they are going to become your JV partners in another lesson).

After getting this far, you should have a good idea about which niche you would like to conquer, as well as some idea about if it is a profitable niche.

Let’s start at the beginning. Just what is a niche marketing? A niche is defined as “a small space or notch”. A second definition is “a space or activity for which a person is best fitted”. Both definitions apply but especially the second. Niche marketing therefore can be described as marketing within a well defined area in which the person or company is well fitted.

In the world of Google and search engines the goal is to appear at or near the top of the list when someone is submitting a keyword or phrase in search of a product, service, or information. Most users of Google will not go beyond the first or second page of results unless they have not yet found what they are looking for.

If you have a travel site for example and “travel” and “vacation” are your primary keywords you will find yourself lost in the competition. You may not even find your website in Google unless you search through the night. To place high on the Google listings or “dominate” those listings you must establish a well defined niche and have the keywords to match. Having established your niche you will begin to find that online marketing with articles really works.

Advertising a “great vacation” to anywhere isn’t going to get it done. If you feature a vacation to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Washington’s San Juan Islands or a special place in the Caribbean, you are starting to work your way towards finding your niche. In reality your niche is something you know as much or more about than anyone else and can write about using articles. This is called article marketing in the niche.

Supply and demand play a key role here. Imagine the scenario in which Google and the Internet would have existed back at the time the hula hoop was invented. A few press releases by the inventor would have announced the product to the world. People would have turned to Google and typed in “hula hoop”. Guess what? All roads would lead to the inventors web site. He would have “dominated Google”. As it turns out he did quite well without the net help, but you get the idea.

Whether you have a product or service to offer it has to be something that there is a demand for and not many suppliers of. It helps too if you know what you are talking about which you probably will if it is your own product or service. High demand, limited competition, and your own credibility can add up to a dominant position in Google search.

Starting a successful online marketing business is not necessarily easy and you will likely fail if you do not find your niche early on. A good approach to finding your marketing niche is through the process of brainstorming. Let your mind roam free and think of as many marketing possibilities as you can. Make a list, and having done so look into the supply and demand possibilities for each item. As stated previously, if you find something that has high demand which only you and perhaps a few others can supply you’re well on your way to a successful niche marketing business.

Opportunities at times stare us in the face and we do not even realize it. Just give some thought to what you have to offer to the world. It’s probably much, much more than you realize. Then look for the unique thing, that which other people will find interesting or important and market it. Sounds simple, but it takes work. Success is never guaranteed of course, not many things in life are, but with perseverance and maybe a little luck you can make your niche market work for you.

Is Google PageRank Still A Valid Marketing Tool?

Just the mention of it can send some webmasters and even quite a few SEOs into fits of rage or ecstasy. Just what is Google PageRank? And more importantly, is the Google PR Toolbar still a valid marketing tool?

The Google PageRank Toolbar in SEO circles is a hotly debated item, as are most issues dealing with Google. Some say it’s useless, others say it gives you a general overview of your site’s standing in Google. Regardless of who is right, this Toolbar shouldn’t be ignored nor worshipped, just closely watched.

The Google PR Toolbar is a simple tool you can download and place on your browser. When you surf the web, this toolbar will give you Google’s PR or Page Rank for that particular site or page. Google ranks all web pages from a scale of 0 to 10. This Toolbar is more like the Richter scale than an ordinary scale, there’s a big difference in the rankings as you go up and they are not proportional.

You must also realize each of these ranking points are further divided and only Google knows the exact placement of your site or page within your shown PR number. For example, if you have a PR6 site your site could be at low end of the PR6 scale (closer to PR5) or at the top end which would make it more of a PR7 site. Big difference.

PageRank Confusion

Many suggest Google is not giving us the real value of the page in the first place and this toolbar is often out of date and more of a smokescreen than real information about a site. There could be some truth in this as Google never gives up all its secrets. Does any company? Certainly not the company that holds the keys to the most powerful economic force on the planet: the Internet.

Complicating matters even further are webmasters and marketers who try to manipulate their own PageRank by buying or exchanging links with other high PR sites. Many are now doing Three-Way linking to try to influence their site’s rankings in Google.

A whole SEO industry has been built up around PageRank for the simple reason the stakes are extremely high. If you can deliver first place rankings for your client’s targeted keywords in Google it means free organic traffic or visitors delivered directly to your site.

Many SEO experts believe Google has a whole list of ranking factors which determine how well your page is ranked. Among others, these ranking factors include Google’s PageRank algorithm (voting system) and Hypertext-Matching Analysis (analyzing page content).

Google’s Position

If you check out Google’s own corporate site for an explanation you will find that Google clearly states its patented PageRank™ algorithm is the heart of their web ranking system which was founded by Larry Page & Sergey Brin in 1998. You will also find that Google says it uses numerous factors including PageRank to examine the whole web and find the most relevant and important pages to match a specific search.

PageRank takes into consideration over “500 million variables and 2 billion terms” when finding the most important pages. Google makes it clear that each page casts a vote for another page and this is reflected in the PageRank. Votes from particular sites or pages might have greater value than others. “Important pages receive a higher PageRank and appear at the top of the search results.”

The question still remains, is the Google PR Toolbar a valid marketing tool? Should you use it?

One can only speak from experience, I have always used the Google PR Toolbar and find it helpful in assessing what Google thinks of a site or page. I rarely link out to sites anymore but if I do I always check any potential linking partners to see their PR. Any site with PR5 or over I will link to it if that site is related and has high rankings for my site’s own targeted keyword phrases. I also check out the number of outbound links on that page, lower is better because the amount of PR passed along is divided equally with the other links.

Sometimes I will link to a lower PR3 or PR4 site if I find the content on that site is extremely good and I know it is only a matter of time before Google upgrades that site to a PR5 or higher. You must be very careful not to link out to any type of ‘link-farms’ as Google will penalize you for it.

In my opinion, many SEO experts worry too much over the exact PageRank or Value Google is giving to a page. Whether or not we can really know the true value of any page? Well, the true value of any web page is staring you in the face in Google’s SERPs for if over time a page consistently holds the #1 spot then that is Google’s true PageRank and Value for that page for a particular keyword or keyword phrase. If your page is consistently in the 1000th spot, then Google doesn’t think your page has much value for that keyword.

Your site’s overall value or PageRank within the Google ranking system may be a little harder to figure out if you dismiss the PR Toolbar as a good indicator of your site’s overall worth within Google. Maybe Google has put into place filters and blinders to discourage the online marketers and SEOs who try to abuse and manipulate PageRank.

Let Your Own Experiences Rule Your Judgement

Again, one can only speak from experience, I believe the Toolbar is very helpful in showing what Google thinks of your pages. Over the years, I have experienced my main website at a PR1 level and I have experienced it at a PR6 level. Believe me, the PR6 is much better. Can’t imagine what a PR8 site would be like to run or the kind of lifestyle it would provide.

For higher PR means better rankings for your site and your keyword phrases. It simply means more traffic and more sales. If you’re optimizing for Google, you should do everything you can to get the highest PR you can possibly get. More importantly, you should be doing everything you can to increase the PR of the pages where you have your long-tail keyword phrases as organic traffic from these pages will usually turn out to be your site’s main revenue source.

I have found one of the quickest ways to raise your Google PR is to get one-way links from high PR6, PR7 and PR8 sites (Think Article Marketing). Google considers these links as votes for your site and ranks your site or page accordingly. Consistently get enough of these incoming one-way links over the long haul and your PR will go up if you have high quality unique content pages that are well optimized with good navigation and formatting.

It will show you the PageRank of all internal and external links on a webpage at once. Extremely helpful when you’re checking out any site or page for at a glance you can see the current Google PageRank of all these links.

Google’s PageRank system, including the PR Toolbar, is something every webmaster and online marketer should be aware of in their struggle for higher rankings. Don’t become obsessed with it, instead use this system to your advantage to build better pages and sites. For despite all the misconceptions and intricacies of such a complex system, no webmaster can deny if you conquer the Google PagePank system, it will deliver the goods.
